The Bigg Market in Newcastle would not be the same without this North East institution, which was founded by the Late Lord of Harpole who sadly passed away in recent months. However, his family maintain that his legacy will continue and the reputation of character and fun will remain. Such infamous dishes include 'curry hell' the dish that is officially the hottest curry in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It is a normal sized portion of curry made with chilli seeds and chilli powder served with either rice or chips. If you eat the full portion it is free! To give you an idea of how hot the Curry Hell dish is, Vindaloo is like ice cream by comparison! However, for the less brave and those looking for something more traditionally Indian, they do serve more conventional dishes!

What our members say about Rupali Restaurant

Simply excellent! The waiters were attentive without being crowding. The food was delicious. We also had the pleasure of watching somebody try the "Curry Hell" on another table. I think the guy managed one mouthful before rushing to the toilet... Enough said! Very reasonable priced (including the sundries). We often find that rice, nan etc can be over-priced - this is not the case here. Highly recommended!

Formally known as 'Rupali' this restaurant is somewhat famous in the North-East. We've been going to this restaurant for years because the food is so good. Despite being located in the Bigg Market and having really cheap special offers, the quality of the food is fantastic. The staff are always very friendly, especially the owner: the Lord of Harpole!

Great place, been loads of times, pleasant staff and nice food very reasonably priced. Go for the 'Viz' menu 10 pounds for papadoms, pickles, starter, main course, nan, rice, side dish. Great value anytime even Friday and Saturday. He offers a "curry Hell' hottest curry in the world, free if you eat it. Don't attempt it, you have been warned. I can eat any strength of curry for England but after a few forkfuls my nose was numb, could not feel my lips plus other problems, don't do it, have the normal food which is excellent and the owner is a right character. Well recomended.
