The Almond

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

The Almond is a Modern European restaurant on the West side of the city centre that combines favourably priced dining with an informally spirited and friendly service. The ambience is relaxed and modern, set within a red-brick building full of character. Located about half way down Wollaton Street, the restaurant has been said to stand out 'like a well-manicured thumb'!
The Almond came to being at the latter end of 2006 and is gaining recognition as somewhere to enjoy an evening of fine food, featuring in the NEP's recent list of Nottingham's coolest places to eat out.
The European-influenced menu is changed regularly so there is always something new to experience.
Example Mains include Gressingham Duck Breast with Yellow Peach and Raspberry Vinegar, Oven-Baked Fillet of Salmon, Tuscan Bean Cassoulet, and Fillet of Scotch Beef.
Be aware that sumptuous Desserts such as Strawberry & Rhubarb Gratinated under a Kirsch and Champagne Sabayon, the Trio of Chocolate, or The Almond Selection of European Cheeses may be difficult to resist!

What Gourmet Society members say about The Almond

Took my husband here for his birthday in June. We were the only ones eating, which seemed a shame for a Thursday evening. However, we did get very attentive service because of this (maybe a little too attentive?), and I imagine if it was busy, you would feel quite cramped as the tables are quite close together. The food was lovely though, although slightly overpriced without the Gourmet Society card. I'm sure we'll return at some point, although I'm more inclined to try out other restaurants we haven't visited. Wouldn't not recommend this place though.

We dined at The Almond to celebrate our wedding aniversary. The restaurant is situated upstairs in a very nice old building in the centre of Nottingham and we were made to feel welcome and our order was taken quickly. The offer in the Gourmet Society brochure apparently differs from the web site but the proprietor honoured the 3 free courses. I must say that we clearly went on a difficult evening as a member of staff had rung in sick and the owner seemed to be doing everything. Luckily, being a Thursday evening it wasn't too busy as I don't know how she would have coped with more customers.

We ordered wine at £12 but were told it was unavailable and the substitute was charged at £14. We ordered a dish of olives to nibble whilst we waited for our meal which were delicious.

I started with a chicken and bacon salad topped with an organic egg and vinagrette which came minus the egg and vinagrette. As the very nice owner was already clearly stressed I felt unable to ask where it was!! Husband's starter of belly pork bruschetta with chutney was good.

My main of wild mushroom risotto was O.K.ish but in the words of Michael Winner, not historic - a little bland if I'm honest. Husband ate locally sourced chicken in a roasted pepper sauce which he was impressed with. We were not impressed that vegetables had to be ordered and paid extra for. £2.95 for a serving of carrots for instance.

Puds were nicely presented and tasty. We weren't asked if we wanted coffees or further drinks though a jug of table water had been provided with the initial order.

There was a problem with the card terminal which meant that husband had to leave me sitting to find a cash point before we could pay. No service charge was added to the bill.

Husband thorougly enjoyed all his courses whilst I had mixed feelings. We felt that with the Gourmet Society offer we had value for money but I doubt we would have been completely happy if we had been paying full price for it all but maybe we just picked a difficult evening for them.
