The Hemsley

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

Nestled in the glorious grounds of Nottingham University is one of Nottingham's best kept secrets. The University Club is home to The Hemsley Restaurant, a building that was originally built in 1904 for William Sydney Hemsley, who at the time was the managing director of Hemsley & co. The house was later opened as a club in 1954 by the University and in May 2006 after an extensive refurbishment the Hemsley restaurant opened its doors to the public. The Hemsley has steadily grown a reputation of imaginative and delectable food combined with attentive service. All the food is freshly prepared including the hand baked bread prepared by its talented team of accomplished chefs' led by Head Chef Tony Sloan. The Restaurant is modern and relaxing and during your visit you must sit back and enjoy the sparkling chandeliers, warm colours and the leather seated lounge area. The proprietors believe that it is not only its fine food, service, and carefully chosen wines that are its appeal to a growing number of discerning customers, but also that the Hemsley is off the beaten track from city centre locations. The Hemsley were runners up in the ‘Local Produce Menu’ category at the Nottingham Restaurant awards 2008.

I visited The Hemsley for an evening meal with my husband. We did'nt even realise that The Hemsley was in the University grounds. We arrived at the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to be seated in a large room that was not crammed with tables. So much nicer to have a conversation that no one can listen in to.
Our waiter was so pleasant and friendly.making suggestions concerning the side dishes that would compliment our meal.
I ordered the Halibut which was delicious and my husband ordered the Lamb Rump which he ordered pink and that was how it came.we also had a side dish of risotto which was creamy and obviously made by a true chef and the hand cut chips where presented Jenga style. My husband and i where fighting over the last chip they are really moorish.
All i know is that i will be booking a table very soon.

The Hemsley at the University Club is a fantastic find, and we are very grateful to the Gourmet Society for making us aware of it. A classy dining room in a lovely setting, with extremely friendly and efficient service, made for a wonderful evening out. The food was simply delicious. We started with Pigeon and Lamb, and followed this with Beef and Guinea Fowl for main. The highlight of the meal, though, was the tasting plate we shared for dessert. It contained 6 of the best desserts we have ever tasted, including lemon curd crème brulee, pecan pie, banana sorbet, chocolate cake, lime chantilley and a lemon filo pastry wrap. All in all a perfect end to our meal. What really made our trip special, though, was the exemplary service we received. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive, and the chef himself came and spoke to us about our meal. Being big foodies, we eat out a lot, and will certainly be making many more visits to The Hemsley. You should too!

I joined the gourmet society in July this year and have tried to make as much use of it as possible. My partner is new to the area, so it has given us the opportunity to try out some of the local restaurants and save money at the same time. Our visit to The Hemsley is not the first in Nottingham but it stood out from the others we have visited in the area, in lots of ways. The location is beautiful. We are looking for somewhere to have our wedding in a couple of years time and this location would be perfect. The staff at The Hemsley were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble. I have a problem eating due to having throat cancer a few years ago, I have to have a lot of sauce or gravy in order to eat a meal, I find this very difficult in most restaurants as people dont seem to understand when I try and explain my requirements. At The Hemsley they listened to what I needed and did everything they could to make sure I had every thing I asked for, and they didnt make me feel like a nuisance. I had the canneloni of pumpkin and garlic which was delicious and came just how I asked for it. My partner had beef carpaccio and said it was the best he had ever had.For our main course I had duck with vanilla mash it came with bok choy tempura, a favourite of mine, the duck was cook to perfection and melted in my mouth, which is more than I can say about a lot of duck I have eaten when out recently. My partner had the salmi of guinea fowl with the most lovely roasted vegetables (I had to try!!!). For dessert we shared a tasting plate of the Hemsley dessert selection, I havent had one of these before and it gives you a chance to try all the desserts on offer! This was great for me as I have a real sweet tooth, My favourite was the lemon curd creme brulee which was set just right, I have had them over set and under set but this was perfect. I asked the waitress if the bannana ice cream was made on the premises and she assured me the chef made it himself. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, I will deffinately be going back and if the standard is as good on my next visit I will probably book it for our wedding in 2009.
