Toll House

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

The Toll House restaurant is set in an idyllic location alongside the River Trent at Gunthorpe in Nottinghamshire. It is only 8 miles from the centre of Nottingham but could be 800 when you are sitting next to the river on a summer's evening with swans floating past you. There has been a pub on this site for time and memorial. However now under the careful ownership of a new family with the day to day operations overseen by brothers Simon and Seb, it has become a destination restaurant. There is a comfortable modern waiting area in which to enjoy pre-meal drinks and conversation. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, with collages and paintings combining interesting designs and motifs by using driftwood salvaged from the river when flooded. The light and airy dining room can comfortably seat 40 diners yet still preserve privacy between tables. Full length French windows give access to the riverside garden and thus in the summer, allows you the opportunity to dine alfresco.

We visited this restaurant and although it was a Saturday the place wasn't full, it had a nice relaxed atmosphere with nice music playing low as you over look the river. The staff are very good and if your looking for a 3 course meal served over 2 hours, this is the place. We had two cards and but they only accept one so our meal was a £30.00 more than we had hoped, but overall the experience was a good one. The Creme Brulee - Beautiful.

A beautiful location and if you are lucky as we were, can overlook the river trent. We have been to the restaurant now sevaral times and and haven't once been disappointed. The service is always very corteous and prompt. The food is imaginative and well presented. Never had Chinese radishes before!! In all, a very good quality meal at a reasonable price.

The Toll House - Gunthorpe The evening started well, nice bar area with comfy seating, but quickly went down hill after waiting nearly 15 minutes for our drinks and they weren't busy there was my husband, myself and two friend plus another couple. The menu looked good, although I'm vegitarian and there was only one veggie starter and one main course, but they both sounded nice. All the starters were really nice and a good size. However my vegitarian main, pea and mint risotto, came with a side of green beans wrapped in bacon. Two of us had creme brulee for pudding which was burnt on the top and runny in the middle, my husband had strewberries and cream which was good with very flavoursome strewberries. So the food was a bit hit and miss but the main problem was the service our table was booked for 7.30pm, we arrived at 7.15pm and we did not pay and leave the resturant until nearly 10pm. It is nice to have a break between courses, but at times we thought we'd been forgotten.
