The Thomas Paine Hotel does afternoon teas the traditional way. Soft, freshly baked scones are topped with a triple-whammy of raspberry caviar, clotted cream and butter. Daintily sized cakes accompany the scones, often featuring flavours like lemon butter cream or coffee and walnut. The sandwich fillings are traditional, too ? spicy ham and mustard, creamy egg mayonnaise, flavoursome smoked salmon and crunchy cucumber. rnrnA pot of tea or coffee is also on hand, with diners able to choose from afternoon, Earl Grey, or a range of exotic teas like white pear and ginger or Egyptian mint. Fork out a bit extra, and diners can round off the tea with a glass of prosecco.rnrnThe Thomas Paine Hotel's afternoon tea can be taken all over the hotel. If diners decide to stay inside, they can cosy up by the roaring fire in the Paine gallery or settle into comfy antique-style couches in the bar. In the summer, meanwhile, diners may take their tea al fresco on the attractive terrace.rnrnFor a history lesson in afternoon tea, look no further than The Thomas Paine Hotel's owner. If you manage to catch him, he'll happily tell diners about the importance of high tea and about Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who created the much-loved tradition to combat "that sinking feeling" between luncheon and dinner.rnrnDiners will discover The Thomas Paine Hotel by Thetford, home of the famous American-English revolutionary, Thomas Paine. Thetford Forest and Center Parcs Elveden Forest brush the town, and it's easily accessible from both Norwich and Cambridge.
