With the growing need for high quality cask ales and craft beers came the birth of 4Degrees, a Maidstone venue that believes in the unique role that the Great British pub has played in society. They strive to support the fine art of conversation through friendly service staff that do their utmost to make sure that all of their guests leave with a smile on their face, creating an atmosphere that is perfect for socialising.
Customers come in for the drinks, but stay for the sumptuous food on offer in the bar and restaurant. The 4Degrees mantra is ‘keep it simple and make it tasty’, and that is abided by to the letter in a seasonal menu that boasts an array of dishes that are created using only the best in locally sourced ingredients and are cooked fresh to ensure only the best quality. Suitable options to share in the tapas style or to enjoy as an appetiser for a more indulgent meal are the bar snacks and d’oeuvres, which range between sweet honey and mustard glazed cocktail sausages and some spiced nuts that come complete with a slight kick of cayenne pepper.
Further light bites or starters can be found in the seasonal soup, which is served with lentils and bacon, and the potted crab – each to be served with doorstop bread. Following on are a set of hearty mains that promise to give the stomach that certain sense of warmth and satisfaction. Choose between the quintessentially British Toad in the Hole dish, which is made with real ale, mustard mash, and the most exquisite Kent porky white sausages, and a couple of short crust pies that include a chicken and leek and a chicken and bacon number. For those partial to the good old mashed potato, the likes of the fish, shepherds, and cottage pies are readily available.
With the 50% Gourmet Society discount, it seems almost criminal not to round the meal off in style with one of the divine desserts, where the sweet cherry ice cream accompanied rich chocolate brownies are wonderfully contrasted by a tart and heart-warming Kentish fruit crumble. For those with a sweet tooth lacking room in their stomach, yet still desiring something to end the meal with, there is the opportunity to order three smaller versions from the pudding list or to partake in the savoury cheese board selection.
