Crawcrook Tandoori, situated on the outskirts of Newcastle, offers authentic Indian food with a modern twist. Stepping inside, diners will find the cosy restaurant filled with loyal regulars who make the trip to the village of Crawcrook especially to sample the tandoori's food. As one would expect, tandoori is the signature dish at the Crawcrook Tandoori. The meat and vegetables are marinated in a house sauce, which includes secret spices and cool yoghurt, and then cooked in a traditional clay oven. Salad and a mint sauce offer a cooling side. There are many choices of tandoori, including shashlik, which comes barbecued with onions, tomatoes and capsicum. The restaurant also plays to tradition with its biryani dishes, mildly spiced curry cooked with flavoursome basmati rice, nuts and sultanas, and served with a vegetable sauce. Other classic curry dishes are well represented on the Crawcrook Tandoori menu. The kormas are heavy with cream, the bhuna has a deliciously dry heat, and the legendary vindaloo is for those who like it hot. The speciality dishes at add a bit of character to the menu. Honey duck is an unusual addition, as is the pistachio-textured Bengali favourite of mangsho pesta. The salmon bhaja uses a market-fresh piece of salmon steak and the chicken sagwany is a show-stealer, arriving at the table with a sizzling Sambuca topping. Vegetarians have a good selection of dishes to choose from, such as palak paneer is an attractive curry made from spinach, cheese, garlic and green chilli. Meanwhile, the vegetable Malayan is sweetened with bananas and pineapples. The side dishes are largely vegetable-based, too. Standards like Bombay aloo and vegetable bhajis sit side by side with the lentil-heavy tharka dhal and mushroom pilau.
