Number Twelve is a crisp, smart restaurant in Bloomsbury and has more than half an eye on the cultivated, literary history of the area. This plays out not only in the subtle, understated design of the restaurant (ideal for a literati's lunch), but in the refined, well-spaced flavours on the menu. Their standing à la carte menu features a broad range of dishes, from a beautifully fresh minestrone to the roasted fig with parma ham, honey and truffle, or the perfectly done calves liver with pancetta, red chard and poached pears. It's also well worth waiting for the dessert menu, among which the meringue with a just-the-right-size dollop of mascarpone and nicely balanced balsamic strawberry sauce win the day.
