Beside the iconic Velvet Hotel lies one of the best kept secrets in Manchester. Mr White’s English Chophouse is just one of the many acclaimed eateries run by renowned Michelin star award-winning chef, Marco Pierre White. Paying homage to his English roots, White adds his own signature French twist to time-tested British classics. It’s a winning formula that has seen it gain much attention from foodies near and far since it opened in 2015.
The classic chophouse was a staple in London, cropping up around the late 1690s to the delight of many rich diners who could afford quality cuts. Today, Mr White’s puts a delightfully modern twist on this model, adding mid century modern furniture, amber smoked glass pendant lighting, sumptuous sapphire curtains and exposed brick. But while it certainly looks polished, this is relaxed dining at its best.
From fresh veg to locally-sourced beef, diners can always look forward to an ever-changing menu of seasonal dishes such as duck rillettes, 35-day-aged ribeye and swordfish steak with ratatouille. Meat may be the focus, but White hasn’t left out his vegetarian diners. They can indulge in burrata-topped panzanella salad, grilled asparagus with lemon butter or velvet artichoke with wild mushroom Provençale.
Whether it’s a dinner party or a romantic meal for two, a meal at Mr White’s English Chophouse will surely be one not easily forgotten. Any visit will be even more of a treat for Gourmet Society members, who can enjoy savings off their bills when they call to book ahead and present their cards upon arrival. It’s the perfect excuse for a bottle of wine or a few bar bites to share.
