The Red Lion, in Caythorpe, is proud to have won a nod from the Good Pub Guide 2015. That's partly due to proprietor John Cork and his team of welcoming staff and top notch chefs. But it's also because of its setting. The Red Lion is in on Caythorpe's High Street, settled in a pub decorated with cavernous brick fireplaces and cushy armchairs. There's plenty of room here — The Red Lion spreads itself over a couple of dining rooms, a garden-view room, a bar and a new terrace that's ideal for al fresco dining.
When it comes to food, The Red Lion showcases the best of British. Diners could start their meal with a warming home-made soup crafted from seasonal ingredients, served with soft warm bread. From the mains, diners could pick fish and chips — crispy beer batter, minted mushy peas, home-made chips — or a top quality steak and ale pudding. For something a little lighter, diners could opt for one of the carefully chosen international dishes, such as lasagne tiered with tomato, artichoke and mascarpone, hoki fillet pan-fried in soy sauce, or the lemongrass-laced Thai green fish curry. A range of lighter lunches features classic pub grub like doorstop sandwiches and king-size jacket potatoes. However, the fillings are a little more creative than the usual fare, starring flavours such as king prawns in Marie Rose sauce and chicken, mushroom and chorizo alongside tried and tested favourites like bacon and Brie.
The desserts at The Red Lion show off richly decadent British recipes, from a syrupy sponge spiced with ginger to a butterscotch-soaked sticky toffee pudding. To finish off the meal in true British style, diners could order from an array of traditional ales.
