A little background
Launched in September 2013, the aim of the Club is to connect small breweries around the UK with beer connoisseurs and enthusiasts or those looking for an ideal gift. In doing so, consumers are given a greater choice of bottled beers; small British producers are able to thrive; and the National Trust raises valuable income for their charitable work.
Craft beer is currently undertaking a renaissance. In 1900, there were over 6,000 breweries in the UK but by 1970 there were just over 100. The demise of the small brewer and declining quality of ale sparked the formation of CAMRA in 1971. Today, there are over 1,000 independent breweries making over 5,000 different bottled beers. A high street store typically stocks 50-70 of these; representing a fraction of the available range. The Beer Club offers small brewers a more sustainable route to market.
Why does the National Trust have a Beer Club?
-The National Trust has a historical connection to beer. Country-house brewing was prevalent during the period 1500-1900 and a number of properties managed by the National Trust had working breweries on site.
- The National Trust maintains a traditional working hop farm in the grounds of Scotney Castle in Kent. Hops are a key ingredient in the manufacturing of beer.
- The National Trust now cares for over 60 pubs.
